Other things to do in the area include;
Bird watching: Buzzards, kites and eagles abound here and not too far away golden eagles have been spotted. It is possible to watch the birds flying over the mountain tops from the comfort of a sun bed by the swimming pool!
Botany: The mountains of the Ariege are famous for the 100 or so varieties of wild orchids which grow in abundance. The wild flowers are breathtaking at all times of the year.
Riding: There is a riding school within a short drive of the house on the way to Lavelenet. The paths and tracks around are numerous and beautiful.
Climbing:There are many sites for climbing within easy reach.
Trekking: This region is a trekkers’ paradise with the possibilities of donkeys carrying your belongings! It is possible to hire a guide for the trip.
Mountain Biking: Cycle hire is possible locally and around Montbel. The cycling is exciting and challenging with many VTT track available, one of which starts from the village. The Tour de France passes near Leychert each year and many important teams come to the area to train for major events. There is exciting mountain biking at Les Monts d’Olmes with hiring facilities on site. Please see skiing below.
Fishing: There are both lakes and rivers in the area where fishing is permitted.
Golf: there is a challenging golf course about 30 minutes away at La Bastide de Serou. There is an 18 hole course as well as a small practice course with 6 holes and a driving range. After enjoying a round in such a lovely setting, you can enjoy a meal at the club restaurant. Golf clubs can be hired at the course. More information at www.golf.ariege.com
Canoeing and kayaking: A 12 kilometre course is nearby on the Ariege river and takes about 2 hours. You are then collected by bus and returned to your starting point. See www.ariege-evasion.com
